I mixed up my first batch of HHG. It came in a grainular form. I don't have a scale so I mixed it to a little thinner than maple syrup consistentcy. It cleaned up great. My question is if I'm not exact on the mix will it still be strong enough? I glued up a couple of scrape pieces and will see how it holds tomorrow. Since I'm not confident with it, I used Titebond Original yellow on my backs. Clinton |

I mix it by weight and it is about the consistency of honey at 145*. Sounds like yours might be a tad thin. See how strong your test pieces are and try a little thicker consistency for comparison. |

After looking further, I don't think I "cooked" it long enough. I only had it in the pot maybe 5 min. Clinton |

I let it set in solution over night before heating it. Before I had a triple beam balance I took a bag of granules to my pharmacist friend and had him weigh out 55 grams of granules. I then put that amount in a graduated cylinder just to get an idea of its volume. I then used 100 ml of distilled water to make the recommended 1 part glue to 1.8 parts distilled water. It used that method for a year nefore I got a balance. It worked! |

Clinton, Go to Frank Ford's site and read all he has to say about hide glue. Then check out how Sylvan Wells cooks his glue. I use their great advice with wonderful results. I would be more than happy to walk you through it if you like. I have a small digital scale that I bought at Staples but they are $30 to $50 or so. But I use it for lots of things including weighing all of the pieces of the guitar to record for future reference. Shane |

I normally have mixed the glue anywhere from 50/50 to 65/35 give or take. I like it where I can turn my bottle over and it just flows out slightly, not too watery or the strength gets lessened, but too thick and it's a pain to work with as it gels so quick. Once you get used to it you'll love it! I mix fresh stuff everyday, and I've really gotten comfortable with it and get great results. |
